International Excellence

International Excellence

By Peizhao Sun

Delicatessen first appeared in the English language almost a century ago. The German loanword, spelled delikatessen originally, signifies rather a more sophisticated store for fine, prepared food; though it could be argued that the deli's of New York, in essence, provides the same delicatessen service, but the significance is in the quality difference. Delicatessen in Lower Manhattan, with its impressive menu and sexy, modern decor, brings international comfort food to the equally international SoHo in the same spirit as a century ago, and strives to create the best dining experience.

Though much truth is held in the saying that one should never judge a book by its cover, much can be said by one quick look at the facade. In Delicatessen's case, the restaurant's gorgeous; glass garage doors give an alluring peak into the equally modern and elegant restaurant.

The bi-level space consists of the upstairs dining room, the downstairs lounge and bar, all furnished in quaint, wooden planks. Black leather banquettes lined the wall in the dining room while simplistic booths and chairs fill the space. In the downstairs lounge and bar area, modern glass ceilings let in rays of sunlight or, at night, the quiet twinkles from stars above, completing the look and inking the minimalistic, Delicatessen Signature.

Crafted by Executive Chef Michael Ferraro, the menu presents an exciting array of "international comfort food," as Delicatessen puts it. The sizzling and savory Truffle Spinach & Artichoke Dip, prepared with Parmigiano Reggiano and served with crispy tortilla chips is the perfect appetizer to share a catty chatter over; while Tuna Tartare, a Chef's specialty, is prepared with wasabi tobiko and taro chips is charming with its refreshing flavors and gorgeous texture. The Duck, Duck Goose Dumplings, made with smoked duck breast, foie gras, cherry chutney and almonds have also earned itself a following as the dish dazzles guests with its layers of complementing flavors and its gorgeous richness.

There's also the Macbar Style section that gives the spotlight to the ultimate comfort food — mac & cheese, but with clever and surprisingly delicious twists. While the Classic reigns on top, innovative macs such as the Mac Reuben or the Mac 'Shroom that features Fontina and roasted mushrooms, mascarpone, also share the throne. Entrees do not disappoint either with star items like the Diver Sea Scallops or the Steak Frites.

Whether it's the ingredients or the origin of the dish, or even the interior design, Delicatessen's chic, international energy is tangibly present in every element. With quality food and welcoming service, Delicatessen in SoHo is the deserving spot for the elegant Manhattanites.
