The fall film festival circuit kicks off with the 38th annual Toronto International Film Festival this September 5, 2013 – September 15, 2013; I sat down with the leading New York film critics to get a clearer picture of the upcoming awards season’s major contenders. From period dramas to biopics, sci-fi flicks and dark comedies, if buzz is any indication, these films should top your early awards season watch list as you gear up for the 71st Annual Golden Globe® Awards on Sunday, January 12, 2014, and the 86th Academy Awards on March 2, 2014.

Roberto Bolle: An International Ballet Superstar

By Joe Alexander

I caught up with ballet’s sexiest superstar Roberto Bolle while he was on a boat off Capri in his native Italy. The critically acclaimed dancer, who lives between Milano and NYC, is bringing his show “Roberto Bolle & Friends” to City Center for a one-night gala on September 17th.  Bolle, who started these shows 13 years ago in Europe, said he was inspired by “Pavarotti & Friends” and hopes that he can expand the audience for ballet the way The Three Tenors helped to popularize opera. “It is the first time I’m bringing my gala to NYC and I’m really happy about that,” said Bolle, who has been a Principal Dancer at American Ballet Theatre since 2009 and has held the title of Etoile of La Scala Theatre for a decade.

A Costume Master

Santo Loquasto

By Yona McDonough

You may not know the name Santo Loquasto, but you have most likely have seen his work.  Loquasto has designed scenery and costumes for some of the biggest names in the business, and his skill sets ranges from classical ballet to Broadway, and from live theater to film–with a healthy dash of opera tossed into the mix.  I met with Loquasto on muggy August day at the Margot Patisserie on 74th Street.  A modest man with a dapper beard and killer smile, he sips an iced coffee while we talk; every now and then, he flashes that dazzling smile.

DJ Alex Cecil: Clawing His Way To The Top

Hot DJ Alex Cecil is a prime example of taking a leap of faith and following your passions in life. While growing up on the Upper East Side in New York City, he explored his artistic side, taking up the cello in the 2nd grade. “I was talented at it, but it wasn’t the right medium for me,” remembers Cecil, who was also very good with numbers and received a perfect score on his math SAT’s. At Georgetown University he majored in finance and minored in art, to challenge and expand his mind. After graduating, he worked for Citibank for five years until one day he decided to do something very different.

Jessica Lichtenstein’s Peep Show

By Joe Alexander

Looking at the art of Jessica Lichtenstein, one is transported into an imaginary world of childlike hedonism.  The colors bombard you with a familiar sense of happiness, the thick acrylic glimmers back at you like a diamond on display, and the girls well…they smile at you, seducing you from behind an optical lens as you voyeuristically “peep” into their candy colored landscapes.  But as always, there is more behind that lens than meets the eye.
