HOTEL CHANLER: LUXURY ON THE CLIFFS OF NEWPORT

The Vanderbilts and Astors called it home. Doris Duke was the grand dame about town. It was the elitist summer playground for the scions and industrialists from the Gilded Age. Sitting at the edge of these elegant and massive mansions along the Cliff Walk is the luxurious boutique Hotel Chanler. Sporting the similar Old world European Beaux Arts architecture of the area, The Chanler boasts the best ocean views in Newport at the start of the famous Cliff Walk that meanders cliffside amongst the landmarked mansions.

Perfect for a romantic getaway, each of the 20 oversized rooms has a different historical theme that has been lovingly curated by its owner to offer a different experience on each visit. Styles range from the dark wood paneled English Tudor room that gives the feeling of living during the Renaissance period, to the Medieval Gothic room, both of which are perfect for cozy Winter nights. For those who prefer a lighter decor opt for the French period Louis XVI signature room that's straight out of Versailles, or a classic New England style room decorated in the Williamsburg, Federal or Greek Revival period. For additional privacy the stunning Oceanside Villas evoke the feeling of a gorgeous Cape Cod cottage that are decorated in a contemporary seaside palette and named after our favorite summer islands- Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, and Block Island.

Spend the day walking through the perfectly preserved past to take a glimpse at the power and immense wealth that presided over the area a century ago. The most famous mansion is the breathtaking 70 room Breakers that was once the summer estate of Cornelius Vanderbilt. The stunning Rosecliff was where the original Great Gatsby was filmed, and the opulent Marble House was inspired by the Petit Trianon of Versailles boasting over 500,000 cubic feet of marble.

Afterwards treat yourself to some smores by the fire pit that overlooks the ocean before heading to dinner at the Spiced Pear. Whether indulging in the New England Tasting Menu or dining at the chefs table, dishes change daily to highlight different locally sourced ingredients. Decadent approaches to traditional New England items include veal cheek with Tahitian vanilla and maple syrup, butter poached lobster with foie gras, and sirloin with a lobster and brie polenta, along with a sinful seasonal soufflé. A perfect way to end the night is to order a butler drawn rose petal bath lit by candlelight. •
