From Tuesday November 29th to Friday December 2nd, Surface Media hosted a variety of Art Basel events centered on art, fashion, design and culture in Miami Beach. The events included 5 design talks with designers/influencers and 2 parties. Highlights included Design Dialogues No. 30-33, #TLKS by Adidas Originals, 21c 10-year anniversary and the Party Vol. 2.
On Tuesday, November 29th, Swiss designer and entrepreneur Yves Béhar and OMA architect Shohei Shigematsu joined Surface editor-in-chief Spencer Bailey at Casa Faena in Miami Beach for Design Dialogues No. 30. Presented in partnership with Perrier-Jouët’s prestige cuvée champagne, Belle Époque, it was held next door to the recently opened OMA-designed Faena Forum, Shigematsu talked about the public versus private makeup of modern cultural venues.

The events resumed on Wednesday November 30th with Design Dialogues No. 31 at the Faena Art Time Capsule featuring fashion designer Virgil Abloh and streetwear designer Heron Preston who discussed expressing culture through their trail blazing careers. Key guests included Anwarii Musa, founder of Artmatic, Amy Astley, Editor-in Chief at Architectural Digest.
Design Dialogues No. 32 continued on the afternoon of the 30th featuring the president of Rhode Island School of Design, Rosanne Somerson, and co-founder of Art Production Fund and RISD graduate, Yvonne Force Villareal, who joined Surface Editor-in-Chief Spencer Bailey.
On Thursday, December 1st, Surface partnered with Adidas to present #TLKS by Adidas Originals at the Miami Marine Stadium on Key Biscayne. The discussion was moderated by Surface Editor-in-Chief Spencer Bailey and featured Ben Jones, Adwoa Aboah, and Pusha T. The discussion was followed by a performance by Pusha T.
Thursday evening, Surface hosted 21c Museum Hotels 10-year anniversary pajama party in the Miami Design Distract at the Palm Court Event Space. Hosts Laura Lee Brown and Steve Wilson of irreverent 21c Hotel Group rang in the celebration with special performances by a diverse group of talent. Artist Ben Jones, DJ Mia Moretti, PPOW Gallerist Wendy Osloff enjoyed performances by The Skins, Narcissister and Joseph Keckler with DJ sets by Mia Moretti and Devin Lucien and drinks from Reyka Vodka, Montolobos Mezcal, Champagne Lanson, Peroni Beer, and VOSS Water.
The Design Dialogues series continued on Friday afternoon with No. 33 at the Faena Art Time Capsule, Surface’s final discussion of the week. This installation featured Craig Robins, Diana Widmaier Picasso, Ximena Caminos and moderator, William Hanley. The discussion focused on the theme of eroticism as a theme for art and sex as an inspiration.
On Friday evening, Surface Media hosted The Party Vol. 2 at the Faena Art Time Capsule, a geodesic dome on the beach behind the Faena Hotel. Vol. 2 is a continuation of the last party Surface Magazine hosted during Art Basel. The scene was a mashup of designers, models, musicians and street style stars such as fashion designer Maxwell Osbourne, artist Philip Colbert, model RJ King, blogger/style influencer Aimee Song, model Adwoa Aboah, British visual artist Shantell Martin, social Gaia Matisse, fashion designer Andrew Warren, model Shanina Sheik, Adidas VP of global design Nic Galway, Model Karolina Kurkova, Beats by Dre CMO Omar Johnson, social Alexandre Assouline, designer Sebastian Errazuriz, artist Zoe Buckman, hip-hop artist Travis Scott, dancer Shari Loeffler, Architect Bjarke Ingels, hip-hop artist Joey Bada$$, artist Hank Willis Thomas, social influencer Yesjulz, hip-hop artist Raury and actress Rose McGowan helped celebrate the magazine’s latest Art issue during Art Basel Miami.
