Tea: A Cultural History and a Contemporary Review

By Demetra M. Pappas

For a woman who was once weaned on coffee (as a child, a spoonful in a cup of milk was the gateway to a lifelong addiction to caffeine), there was an introductory course to tea on trips to London, followed by a move there for graduate school (and serious addiction). Tea (the drink) was a big thing in school (one professor would adjourn like clockwork for 10 late-morning minutes, proclaiming, “I do believe it is time for tea,” which ultimately created a room full of Pavlov-style students. To find anyone in the afternoon, a tour through the cafeteria between 2:30PM and 3:30PM was sure to turn up some very strong tea, as well as whoever was sought. Further, a whole subculture referred to the evening meal as “tea,” rather than “supper” (meaning a light post-theater meal) or “dinner” (often referring to a dressy date at a swanky place).

For an impromptu romantic escape, Philadelphia beckons as a destination time and time again. A fast train ride from NYC lands you in the heart of a city alive with appealing sites, restaurants and activities. Like the Van Gogh exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (through early May) and the increasingly popular Philadelphia Beer Week in early June.

London is one of only a handful of places that can fulfill your need for excitement and satisfy your New York sensibility.

Magnificence by the Beach

By Angela Pape

Located in one of South Florida’s most charming regions, the Chesterfield Hotel, Palm Beach, is a historic landmark that has been brilliantly transformed into a boutique 4-star hotel. Upon original construction in 1926, this building was designed with the style and flare of a European bed and breakfast. Although restorations have since been made, the historic qualities of this property have remained intact. The Chesterfield has now found its niche as a member of the Red Carnation Hotel Collection as well as the Small Luxury Hotels of the World.

A Mexican Jewel

By Christopher A. Pape

In the age of the internet and instantaneous access to information, there are few places and things that remain ‘undiscovered’. Todos Santos, on the tip of Baja Sur and along the Pacific Ocean, feels like it’s one of those rare places that not many know about, but are sure to fall in love with once they do.  The town has all the properties of a beloved jewel of Baja similar in quality and taste to a southern Spanish town or one found on the island of Sicily.

By Alexandra Kastleman
