Kimberly Rockefeller, Cornelia Guest, Anne Hearst McInerney, Amanda Hearst, Patricia Hearst Shaw and her daughter Gillian Hearst Simonds hosted a reception for 400 at The National Arts Club to celebrate the opening of “Charles James: Beneath the Dress.” The exhibition included 100 fashion and erotic drawings by the legendary designer from the extraordinary collection of the writer and public relations guru R. Couri Hay, a group of which were recently featured in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s show “Charles James: Beyond Fashion.” New York Times art critic Roberta K. Smith said in her review of the NAC’s show, “Nothing reflects the complex, sometimes fraught sensibility of the great fashion designer Charles James as completely as his drawings.” Also on view were vintage photographs by Anton Perich and an important film about the designer’s life by Angela Bernhard Thomas. Guests included Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein and his wife Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman, The Metropolitan Museum curator Jan Reeder, author Jay McInerney, Director and Chief Coordinator of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology Valerie Steele, Nicole Miller, The Parrish Art Museum’s Director Terrie Sultan, Chair of the American Theater Wing William Ivey Long, Prince Dimitri of Yugoslavia, Countess LuAnn de Lesseps, Sonja Morgan, Ramona Singer, Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin, the NAC’S President Chris Poe and Dianne B. Bernhard, Director of the Club’s Office of Fine Arts.

Society bandleader, Alex Donner’s orchestra played music from the 1920’s through the 1950’s, James’ peak design period and the World Champion male tango team of Antón Gazenbeek and Jody P. Person performed a sensual piece. Before the dinner, Couri announced he had donated 5,000 meals to Lauren Bush Lauren’s FEED Supper initiative in honor of his guests. Cornelia Guest Events styled the two breathtaking long dining tables for 120 while Bentley Meeker Lighting & Staging illuminated the space. Flavor! Napa Valley co-founder Herb Karlitz and Delphine Blanchot of Clarence Dillon Wines selected Clarendelle Blanc 2012, Grand Vin De Bordeaux and Clarendelle Rouge 2006, Grand Vin De Bordeaux, which were poured along with David Noto’s Altaneve Prosecco.

Among the women dressed in Haute Couture and bijou were CeCe Cord in a Charles James coat, philanthropist Audrey Gruss, sculptress Elizabeth Strong-Cuevas, Janna Bullock, Diandra Douglas, Sharon Bush, Pamela O’Connor and Jean Shafiroff. The men, including Morgan O’Connor, Christopher Pape, Campion Platt, Kipton Cronkite and Dr. Kenneth Mark, wore blue jeans and dinner jackets, as James wore when he accepted the Neiman Marcus Award in 1953, which forced a horrified Mr. Marcus to declare blue jeans fashionable. Among the guests who received Patou gift bags with JOY Forever perfume and bottles of Mercedes-Benz’s new men’s fragrances were Christine Schott-Ledes and George Ledes, Janis and Charles Cecil, Nicole DiCocco, Cheri Kaufman, Dale Noelle, Dr. Nicholas Toscano, Leesa Rowland and Larry Wohl, Cassandra Seidenfeld, Shawn Kolodny and Elaine Sargent. This month, artists Ilya and Emilia Kabakov have a show up at the NAC until November 29th. nationalartsclub.org

“Gone Girl”’s Ben Affleck says, “God help me if I ever do another movie with an explosion in it. If you see me in a movie where stuff is exploding you’ll know I’ve lost all my money.” We’ll be watching. Leading lady Rosamund Pike, “I think I’ll be flavor of the month when I’m in my fifties.” Funny man Neil Patrick Harris, “I enjoy darker sardonic wit more than knock-knock jokes.” Fiery co-star Emily Ratajkowski, “I have great childhood memories of cow-tipping, going off and getting lost in the bog for hours, and coming home covered in dirt.” … Robert Downey Jr. stars in “The Judge,” “When you have a good script you’re almost in more trouble than when you have a terrible script.” … “The Best of Me”’s Michelle Monaghan quips, “I’m not too modest of a person. I’ve got a pretty blue sense of humor.”If you say so. … Reese Witherspoon, who’s new film is “The Good Lie,” looks to awards season, “It’s funny that it all becomes about clothes. It’s bizarre. You work your butt off and then you win an award and it’s all about your dress.” Too true. … “Fury” leading man Brad Pitt, “I’m one of those people you hate because of genetics. It’s the truth.” A pregnant Zoe Saldana says,”I love aging. Why would I want to be 21 for the rest of my life?” Her “The Book of Life” co-star Christina Applegate admits, “I got off on the fact that a guy would be so into me from the get-go without really knowing me. That’s probably why I had so many bad relationships.”
