Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge, escorted by the First Lady of New York City Chirlane McCray, arrived at Northside Center on December 8. The historic hour and one half visit brought much excitement and heightened media attention to Northside and the Harlem community as the motorcade and scores of security personnel filled the streets. The Duchess and First Lady met with Northside Executive Director & CEO Dr. Thelma Dye in a briefing to learn more about Northside’s history, mission and services. They also visited a classroom of the children who were anticipating the arrival of a special Princess that they imagined was similar to Elsa from the Disney movie “Frozen.” The Duchess and First Lady wrapped holiday gifts for the children, along with other special guests, as part of the Northside Center’s annual gift wrapping event….
According to Variety, “Girls” star Lena Dunham has purchased a multi-million dollar apartment in New York’s swank and traditionally somewhat staid Brooklyn Heights-hood. The Daily Mail reported that the eight-time Emmy-nominated actress shelled out $4,887,600 for a sizable apartment in a brand new, five-unit boutique building. The pad boasts four bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms plus a direct entry elevator that opens to a foyer larger than many $2,000 a month Manhattan studio apartments. On Wednesday, December 10, International Rights Day, Vital Voices Global Partnership inaugurated the Vital Voices Solidarity Award in New York City to recognize men combating violence against women. The awards ceremony and dinner were held at the IAC-IAC headquarters in downtown Manhattan. The evening honored four outstanding men who have spent much of their lives advocating on behalf of women and girls in the United States, and around the world, to fight for universal equality and a world in which women live free from violence. This year, four outstanding honorees received the Voices of Solidarity Award: Vice President Joe Biden, Sir Patrick Stewart, Don McPherson, and Bafana Khumalo. Back in November, worried New Yorkers were relieved when news broke that beloved former model/restaurateur B. Smith had been found safely in a midtown Manhattan restaurant. B, who suffers from Alzheimer Disease had been reported missing from her Sag Harbor home in the Hamptons the previous evening by her husband Dan Gasby.
