A French Charmer

A French Charmer

By Hillary Latos

The French say "pourquoi pas," the Italians say "perche non," this universal colloquialism reflects the subliminal power of suggestion that translates across all cultures and languages. At Whynot Bistro, there are plenty of tasty suggestive reasons to dine at this quaint French bistro located in the heart of the West Village on the corner of Christopher and Gay Street.

What started as a charming neighborhood coffee shop has now expanded into a French bistro along with a subterranean jazz club inspired by the beatnik days of yore. Bringing a touch of Paris to NYC, the menu specializes in casual yet classic French fare, with live jazz in the evenings to capture the romance and ambience of Paris in the spring. The décor is decidedly French with portraits of famous actresses like Bardot and Deneuve adorning the walls with a cozy yet laid back atmosphere enhanced by exposed brick walls and warm wood tones. A favorite is the classic French staple- the croque that's made to order. Start with the monsieur with ham and gruyere, and turn it into a madame with a fried egg, or add fancy toppers such as champignons or smoked salmon. A crowd pleasing favorite is the rich and hearty French onion soup ladled with melted gruyere that is perfect for a cold winter night. Other bistro starters that we love the French for include the garlicky and butter drizzled escargots, charred octopus salad, foie gras au torchon, and a tangy chicken liver mousse with apples and brandy. Chef Dominic Pepe's true talent shines through his delectable main courses that are simply prepared and simply delicious such as the grilled lamb chops, filet mignon with truffled potatoes, ratatouille, and the seared sea scallops accented with smoked lardons and truffles. As the French known for their desserts, be sure to save room for their divinely decadent choices where calories don't count. Choose from a creamy crème brulee, chocolate mousse or a satisfying and rich chocolate soufflé. In keeping with the theme of the restaurant, why not?
