JAN. 2019 DINING OUT: NYC

R17

As the South Street Seaport is experiencing a renaissance in the entertainment and culinary worlds, the latest hidden gem to open is R17, a chic speakeasy inspired rooftop lounge and restaurant atop Pier 17. Offering unsurpassed views of the Brooklyn Bridge and the East River, once you arrive via elevator or escalator, you will feel like you've found a private lounge in an opulent space filled with sleek and luxurious furnishings that transform with the seasons. During winter months, the rooftop embodies a Nordic winter land with a skating rink outside and cozy fireplaces and blankets inside, which will be transformed into an open-air concert venue with a beach house vibe in the warmer months. This will also be the site of many celeb-studded VIP after parties following the Pier 17 concerts.

What sets R17 apart, besides the inviting setting and stunning views, is the expertly executed dishes created by Chef Cassidy Hallman. He applies classic techniques such as sous vide to superb seasonal ingredients to produce a sophisticated New American menu that incorporates international flavors that are executed to perfection. Delicious dishes include a delicately prepared sweetbread, salmon prepared sous vide, chicken with white truffle, Yuzu Kosho, charred octopus with black olive puree, Hamachi crudo with chipotle, honey soy and mustard seeds and Brook trout with ginger and meyer lemon.

The not-to-be-missed cocktail menu was created by David Orellana, who has created innovative interpretations on classic cocktails with housemade seasonal syrups and purees made with fine liquors. Highlights from the menu include San Luis Swizzle with Derrumbes Mezcal, Genepi, pineapple juice, Peychaud's bitters and Serrano pepper, and the Royal Mail with Bacardi 8-Year rum, Veuve Clicquot, Earl Gray, and bruleed grapefruit. Try the Hot Apple Cider spiked with Maker's Mark, Amari and Allspice for an antidote on a cold winter's night.

Areppas

New York is known for its global cuisine.  You can experience a culture simply by walking through a neighborhood or into a restaurant and that's clear at Areppas.  Restaurant creators Celestino Diaz and Brooke Carrie Hil created an accessible, affordable eatery where customers can get a taste of Venezuela and give back to the community at the same time. With every purchase of a fresh, wholesome, savory arepa, a hungry child in Latin America is provided with a hearty meal. Due to this altruistic endeavor, over 70,000 children have received a meal courtesy of Areppas and the UNA X UNA program since its opening in September 2018.

Areppas will open their second brick-and-mortar location in Gramercy in the Spring of 2019. This fast-casual concept, which also has three food carts around town and available for private events, has satisfying options for vegans, vegetarians, and carnivores alike ranging from arepas, bowls, salads empanadas, tequeños, fresh juices, smoothies and even ice cream shakes.
