BEYOND SOUTH BEACH: Midtown, Miami’s Coolest Neighborhood

When you think of Miami, images of South Beach are usually what first come to mind- an endless coastline of white sandy beaches dotted with high-rise hotels and condos. Across the causeway lies Miami's center of creativity in the edgy and hip Midtown neighborhood, which encompasses Wynwood and Edgewater, and lies north of Downtown and south of the luxurious Design District. At the heart of this urban hip neighborhood is the Hyde Midtown, a member of the SBE collection, which is a perfect starting point to exploring everything the edgy area has to offer.

The Design District

After a short walk, you'll arrive in Miami's version of Rodeo Drive- the Design District where art and fashion come together. Home to world-class luxury brands, such as Bvlgari, Louboutin, Dior, Balenciaga and many others, you can explore the day window shopping or enjoying some retail therapy. On the cultural side of the district, visit the Institute of Contemporary Art and Design, which offers free admission year round. With a constant rotation of contemporary artists, this is a great opportunity to view emerging artists not seen anywhere else. Currently on display through spring is Larry Bell: Time Machines; Manuel Solano: I Don't Wanna Wait for our Lives to Be Over; and Judy Chicago: The Reckoning.

After taking in the sites of the area, grab a bite at the St Roch Market – a food hall celebrating the flavors of the world. With 11 different dining options to choose from, there is something for everyone. A curated mix of Miami's best local chefs and bartenders, enjoy Vietnamese, Italian, Japanese, Peruvian or American cuisine and more with all-day dining service in a casual and chic indoor and alfresco environment.

Edgewater

Home to luxurious high-rise condos on the bay, Edgewater is located on the east side of the Midtown district. The latest hotspot to open in Edgewater is Amara at Paraiso founded by James Beard award-winning chef Michael Schwartz. Bold Latin American flavors along with coastal cuisine come together with a South Florida twist in a beautiful waterfront setting overlooking the Biscayne Bay with indoor and outdoor seating.

Wynwood

Considered to be Miami's equivalent of Bushwick, Wynwood is famous for its hipster vibe coupled with amazing street art. At the heart of this funky neighborhood is Wynwood Walls, an outdoor museum showcasing large-scale murals of the world's most famous street artists. Get a deeper understanding of the artists and history that have shaped this hip enclave through the Wynwood Food and Art Tour as you engage on a 2.5 hour art tour with five culinary stops along the way to taste the neighborhood's most popular venues.

For brunch or an evening cocktail, enjoy the cool vibes of Wynwood in the district's only outdoor rooftop bar and lounge at No. 3 Social atop Wynwood Arcade. Enjoy globally inspired shareable bites such as bao and pork belly sliders, ceviche, and conch fritters in this indoor/outdoor hotspot. Their specialty lies in their refreshing and creative cocktails such as the Cactus Flower with mezcal, aloe liquor, aloe juice, and prosecco; Hit the Deck with vodka, habanero syrup and watermelon; or Perfect Pear with muddled kiwi, Absolut pear, and lychee puree. The party gets started in the evenings from Thursday through Saturday and Sunday afternoons with a rotating set of internationally-renowned resident DJs who play some of the best beats from around the world.

Fuel up for a weekend of fun and enjoy a hearty breakfast at Morgan's located in a charming refurbished townhouse that feels like a friend's home in Wynwood. Enjoy huge portions of delicious crowd-pleasing favorites such as the chicken and waffle sandwich, shrimp Cobb salad, sticky buns and the addictive maple-glazed bacon.
