ALEXANDER DREYMON: Diving into the Depths of Fame, Fashion and Future Projects

With Old Hollywood good looks, charisma and down to earth charm, Alexander Dreymon, star of The Last Kingdom, is indeed the last of his kind. Born in Germany, Dreymon, grew up in France, Switzerland and the United States. The dashing Dreymon is not just a pretty face – he's fluent in English, French and German – let's face it, he looks good no matter what he's saying or which language he's saying it in! The actor studied his craft in Paris as well as at the Drama Centre London.

Dreymon can go from refined to rugged, and definitely pulls off the latter ridiculously well with his rough and ripped appearance on the set of his hit show, The Last Kingdom, which is based on historical fiction. His character, Uhtred of Bebbanburg, might be a tough warrior, but Dreymon, who grew up riding horses and was never afraid to get dirty, was prepared for the role. He might have moved around a lot as a kid, but the 36-year-old found where he truly belonged in the acting world. While some of the elements of the story of Uhtred, the son of a Saxon lord who was captured by the Danes might be fictional, Dreymon is very real, both on and off set. 

Before his mega breakthrough role in The Last Kingdom, Alexander appeared in American Horror Story: Coven, and is looking forward to the next chapter of his life, both personally and professionally. In addition to acting, he's also passionate about wildlife conservation and is currently creating a foundation that will raise awareness about the illegal wildlife trade and the importance of protecting endangered species.

How did you get your start in acting?

That was pretty early on- actually from as early as I can remember, I was putting on plays with my cousin which eventually turned into little movies the day we managed to get a camcorder from a family friend. After high school, I took acting classes in Paris and worked at the theatre there for three years, then went on to get proper training in London.

What do you like best about being a part of The Last Kingdom?

Working with the local crew in Hungary and the rest of the cast. We're incredibly lucky to get along so well. Every day is just like going out to play with your friends. I also love that most scenes are shot on location out in the countryside and so much of it involves working with horses. We do long hours but riding and being outside is truly invigorating and always makes me happy.

What are the biggest challenges you've faced in this role?

As fun as it is, the schedule, cold, and amount of work on the show is pretty demanding. So managing to get enough rest and avoiding getting sick becomes an important part of my life while we're shooting. 

What's your favorite place to travel?

I've been lucky enough to do quite a bit of traveling in my life, but one of my favorite places to go is the south of France, where a lot of my family lives. The smells, sounds – especially in summer–are the best way to replenish my energy levels.

How do you decompress?

Since my job takes me all over the globe, one of the most grounding elements in my life is being able to catch up with my friends and family over a long phone call or video chat. I don't technically have a home base, so the people in my life have become representative of the idea of home. 

Do you have any unusual talents/habits?

I have a fast metabolism so I'm constantly eating. And not just regular-sized meals – while I'm shooting I usually have three meals for lunch.

What are your favorite types of roles?

I am drawn to a challenge. So, if there's a character that feels very different from me, I love the idea of trying to figure out how to bridge that gap. I'm also drawn to projects that have a larger message. In that case, as always, the character is important. But the role becomes one element of a larger goal of making a statement. I guess the perfect role would be one where I'm playing someone challenging that exists within the realm of a project that will make people think.

Any upcoming projects on the horizon?

I am currently finishing up filming a movie called HORIZON LINE. We've been working since the end of January. It's been an epic adventure and a challenge in so many ways that are different from the challenges that TLK presents, but it's been a blast. A day after we wrap on this movie, I head to Hungary to begin filming Season 4 of TLK. It'll be quick transition, but I'm looking forward to being back with my TLK family.

Los Angeles.

Where is your favorite place to live?

I've moved around quite a bit in my life, so there are many places that have become home to me. I'm about to return to Budapest for almost 8 months and love it there. It's a city with a lot of character, and you can literally see the history on the walls of the buildings. Lots of good memories. 

What can you tell us about your role in the thriller Horizon Line? 

I play Jackson, who is a dive instructor in Mauritius. I've been incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to learn how to dive in preparation, and I definitely got the bug. He's very different from Uhtred, which is one of the things that drew me to it in the first place.  

How would you describe your fashion sense? 

Jeans, t-shirt, boots. That's kind of it!
