A Stylish Takeoff: Sonesta Miami Airport Unveils Multi-Million-Dollar Renovation

With Refreshed Guest Rooms, a New Latin-Inspired Restaurant, and a Chic Miami Design—This Reimagined Airport Hotel Is Ready for Departure—and Discovery

A Gateway Reimagined in the Heart of Miami

In a city defined by motion, Sonesta Miami Airport just hit cruise altitude. After a five-month, multi-million-dollar renovation, the 309-room hotel—conveniently located minutes from Miami International Airport—has officially reopened with a sleek new look and elevated guest experience that merges comfort, convenience, and culture.

The transformation was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by local leaders and Sonesta executives, complete with signature cocktails, Latin beats by DJ Chavela and Son Qba, and an assortment of creatively reimagined Miami bites like Mini Cuban Sandwiches and Guava Cheese Burgers.

“Today marks an exciting new chapter for Sonesta Miami Airport. Many of our guests are only with us briefly, but despite that, we wanted to create a space that feels welcoming and uniquely Miami. From the vibrant colors and textures in our guest rooms to the authentic local flavors on our menus, every detail was designed to immerse guests in the spirit of Miami.”

Alex Alvarez, General Manager for Sonesta Miami Airport

Design That Reflects the City

Led by DiLeonardo, the hotel’s design overhaul pays tribute to Miami’s architectural past while introducing an aesthetic that feels both fresh and timeless. Think soothing neutrals offset by modern art, rich leather headboards, and playful nods to Art Deco—such as gold accents and pink hallway doors.

“Capturing the vibrant spirit of Miami through bold, nature-inspired colors and art deco details was key. It’s a perfect balance of chic sophistication and tropical energy, ensuring the space feels both timeless and uniquely connected to the city.”

Giana DiLeonardo, Partner at DiLeonardo

All 309 guest rooms were reimagined for both leisure and business travelers, including 117 connecting room options ideal for families or groups. King rooms now feature walk-in showers, while double rooms offer full bathtubs for added convenience.

A New Culinary Anchor: Tailwinds Restaurant

At the center of the hotel’s rebrand is the launch of Tailwinds, a Cuban-inspired restaurant that brings elevated Latin flavors to the hotel’s culinary identity.

Serving everything from Peruvian Fried Rice to Churrasco Steak and the now-signature Guava Burger (a recipe passed down from GM Alex Alvarez’s father), Tailwinds fuses Miami’s multicultural food scene with a modern, global twist.

With its eclectic menu and warm, inviting ambiance, Tailwinds sets the tone for both casual hotel dining and memorable local nights out.

Redesigned for Relaxation and Productivity

Beyond its stylish new rooms and restaurant, the hotel’s amenities received a full upgrade. The outdoor rooftop pool features private cabanas and ample sun deck seating, while the 24/7 fitness center now includes the latest cardio and strength-training equipment.

For events, more than 7,400 square feet of flexible space includes:

  • The Front Room (2,100 sq. ft.), perfect for receptions or casual meetings, complete with built-in bar and multiple TVs

  • Royal Palm Ballroom (3,300 sq. ft.), which can be divided into three breakout rooms

  • Two private boardrooms (each 320 sq. ft.) for intimate meetings

  • Five additional meeting spaces, each 1,100 sq. ft. and equipped with integrated sound systems

Whether it’s a last-minute business gathering, a wedding reception, or a layover escape, Sonesta Miami Airport is now positioned as a true lifestyle destination—not just a stopover.
