Mandarin Oriental Announces Elegant Arrival on Desaru Coast
June 5th, 2025 — Mandarin Oriental is adding a new chapter to its Southeast Asia legacy with the debut of a beachfront retreat in Malaysia’s Desaru Coast, Johor. Set within 128 acres of rainforest and facing nearly 17 kilometers of pristine shoreline along the South China Sea, the property is expected to join the brand’s portfolio later this month, with a full rebranding set for January 2026 under the name Mandarin Oriental, Desaru Coast.
This marks the group’s second hotel in Malaysia and reinforces its presence in the region alongside established properties in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. The new destination underscores Mandarin Oriental’s ongoing strategy to expand into premium resort locales that offer both seclusion and connection—attributes increasingly sought after by modern luxury travelers.
A Strategic Step for Malaysia’s Tourism Landscape
The announcement was formalized on-site at the resort through a hotel management agreement signed by Mandarin Oriental and Destination Resorts and Hotels Sdn Bhd (DRH), the property’s owner.
“Mandarin Oriental has created and defined some of the world’s most renowned properties and destinations across the world, and this, being their choice for their second property in Malaysia, is a testament to Johor’s immense potential. There is no better brand to lead the reintroduction of this iconic beachfront resort property as we prepare for Visit Johor Year 2026.”
Dato' Onn Hafiz Ghazi, Malaysia’s Chief Minister of Johor
The resort arrives at a time when Desaru Coast is rapidly emerging as one of Malaysia’s most promising luxury destinations, known for its year-round tropical climate, ecological richness, and sweeping views of the South China Sea.
Timeless Architecture by Kerry Hill
Originally designed by the late Kerry Hill—a visionary in tropical modernism—the resort represents the final completed work in the architect’s celebrated portfolio. His design approach, defined by an intrinsic connection between built form and surrounding landscape, is evident throughout the property. The result is a seamless interplay of natural materials, modern lines, and calming open-air layouts that enhance rather than interrupt the coastline’s quiet rhythm.
Suites, Villas, and the Art of Coastal Living
The property comprises 44 expansive suites and villas, many of which include private plunge pools and gardens, all framed by panoramic views of the rainforest or sea. Each unit is carefully positioned to ensure both privacy and a sense of openness, in line with Mandarin Oriental’s signature blend of sophistication and tranquility.
Dining spans five distinct venues, merging global technique with local flavors. Among them are a stylish beach club and a casual lounge bar offering sunset views—ideal for a cocktail or leisurely late lunch overlooking the water.
A Destination for Wellness and Discovery
The upcoming Spa at Mandarin Oriental will serve as a sanctuary for holistic wellness. Guests can expect treatments rooted in Eastern healing traditions alongside modern therapies, all offered in serene, purpose-built spaces. Complementing the spa are a fitness center, yoga pavilion, beauty salon, and tennis and padel courts. A thoughtfully designed Kids’ Club—featuring a nature pond, indoor play zones, and outdoor adventure areas—adds a family-friendly dimension to the luxury retreat.
Golfers will also find world-class greens just minutes away. The resort offers access to The Els Club Desaru Coast, home to two championship golf courses: the 27-hole Ocean Course designed by Ernie Els, and the 18-hole Valley Course by Vijay Singh.
Looking Ahead: Branded Residences and Long-Term Vision
Looking beyond its resort offerings, Mandarin Oriental has plans for 40 additional branded residences. These will provide owners the opportunity to access Mandarin Oriental’s signature service within a residential setting—ideal for those seeking a seamless, long-term retreat in a destination that feels both removed and refined.
“A name synonymous with timeless elegance, impeccable service, and deep Asian heritage, Mandarin Oriental is the perfect partner for Desaru Coast. We welcome Mandarin Oriental and look forward to embarking on our destination’s next phase of growth together.”
Dato' Mohamed Nasri Sallehuddin, Chairman of DRH
“This is more than a business alignment; it is a bold cultural handshake between two brands — one an established global icon, the other an emerging destination on the rise — both centred on delivering exceptional guest experiences. We are confident this partnership will set a new global benchmark and firmly place Desaru Coast as a destination for luxury travel.”
Karina Ridzuan, Interim Group CEO of DRH
As global travelers continue to prioritize intimate, wellness-driven, and design-forward escapes, Mandarin Oriental, Desaru Coast arrives as both a statement and a promise—where timeless design meets the evolving rhythms of modern luxury.
