When it comes to dental care, the father and daughter team of Drs. Michael and Morgan Herman are a dynamic duo at the cutting edge of dentistry. From Dr. Michael Herman's 40 years of experience as a leader in cosmetic dentistry – creating and perfecting some of the world's famous smiles – to Dr. Morgan Herman's, more earthly, holistic, Gen-X approach, incorporating total body health and wellness. Walk us through an initial new patient visit.
DR. MICHAEL: We believe the mouth is really the window into your body and we recommend starting with a comprehensive oral exam which is an extensive evaluation that can detect dental as well as medical conditions, often uncovering symptoms before they show up elsewhere in the body. This exam includes an oral cancer screening, TMJ/TMD exam, x-rays, clinical exam, intraoral and extraoral photographs, and a scan to make a digital record of the mouth.

DR. MORGAN: The scan is my favorite part of the exam! We have an amazing iTero scanner that makes a 3D digital model of the patient's mouth instantaneously. It doesn't require any gag-inducing impression material or trays and only takes a few minutes. And since the models are digital and interactive they are the absolute best patient education tool. It's so cool getting to show my patient's their own mouth the way that I get to see their mouth and watching them learn more about themselves. It's also great for tracking changes in the mouth over time, whether that's movement of teeth, changes in the gums, or wear on the teeth.

DR. MICHAEL: Once we complete the evaluation, we focus on our patients' needs and wants from cleanings, fillings, implants, veneers – the full gamut of dental needs – to create a comprehensive treatment plan that utilizes the latest techniques and equipment. We go to all lengths to make the visit as painless and pleasant as humanly possible. You even get candy from our fully stocked candy jar after your visit providing you have been on your best behavior, or course!

Well that sure sounds thorough. Do you have any favorite procedures?
DR. MORGAN: I have really fallen in love with Invisalign! I have begun to think of it as yoga for your teeth and the benefits are just as profound. Proper oral alignment improves so much more than your facial esthetics. Having a "good bite" will not only drastically improve your oral and systemic hygiene, improve your mouth's form and function, stop recession and tooth wear dead in their tracks, and reduce or completely eliminate grinding, clenching, snoring, and sleep apnea, but a stable bite can have positive effects on neck pain, shoulder pain, and even lower back pain. Invisalign is easily one of the best preventative treatments on the market and greatly reduces the need for major dental work in the future, saving patients' time, money, and discomfort. My patients absolutely love this esthetic alternative to traditional braces and positively beam in their new smiles. Knowing that I have given them the confidence and comfort to smile is a phenomenal feeling.

DR. MICHAEL: I enjoy practicing dental facial aesthetics. When it comes to a smile makeover or full mouth rehabilitation, I feel that the teeth and smile need to fit into the entire framework of your face. To this end, and to achieve a youthful smile, I work hand in hand with our on-premises plastic surgeon to administer dermal fillers to smooth wrinkles and tighten areas around the mouth and chin to fully complete the entire aesthetic dental result we are creating. Research shows that people with a brighter and whiter smile look on average 11 years younger and have more confidence.

I also enjoy treating snoring, sleep apnea, and TMJ/TMD patients since I have advanced training in these fields and am a Diplomate in the American Academy of Pain Management and a member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. Over 32 million people suffer with some form of sleep apnea and, if left untreated, this condition can lead to serious health issues – even death. To resolve this disorder we first diagnose our patients using a state of the art at-home sleep apnea testing device so that our patients do not need to go to an outside facility. Our office utilizes the cost effective and convenient Aveo TSD, a small oral device that holds the tongue in place and eliminates snoring, while opening the airways or, when needed in more serious cases, a custom oral appliance. These appliances result in a better night sleep and better overall healthy outlook for our patients.

You two really love what you do! Are you working on any new projects or goals for the future?

DR. MICHAEL: We recently launched the most precious toothpaste on the market, Diamond White – the only patented toothpaste that harnesses the polishing power of genuine diamonds to safely and effectively remove stains from teeth and veneers while polishing, whitening, and enhancing one's smile.

DR. MORGAN: I'm in the business of making smiles and it is truly one of the most rewarding jobs there is.
