BURKE & WILLS – DINING DOWN UNDER IN NYC

New York City is known for its diverse culture, with more than 8 million people residing in one city, you are bound to run into a few different cultures from around the world. The best part is of course the food, which you can find in little street vendors that line the streets or bars that are cleverly tucked away in an ally somewhere in Soho. Residents can find themselves immersed in other cultures as they try all sorts of foods from Greece, Turkey, England, just to name a few.

Situated in the Upper West Side is a down under themed bistro, Burke and Wills. From the outside it doesn't seem like much, but that first step you take will feel as though you jumped on a plane, travelled 24 hours across the world to the great beyond, or down under; whichever you prefer. This chic designed and rustic restaurant serves everything you would expect to eat in Australia. Kangaroo burgers are a must and there are plenty of them, with a side of fries of course. It's the Aussie way. The sea is near when oysters and crabs on the menu. After all Australia is an island and is surrounded by beautiful coastlines.

To introduce a historical aspect, the bistro is named for two British explorers, Robert O'Hara Burke and William John Wills who embarked on an expedition to cross Australia from south to north in 1860. The interior is highly influenced by explorers as the subtle metal contrasts with the classic dark distressed wood, to give the establishment a rustic authentic feel. An angled skylight ceiling lights the very intimate dining room towards the rear delightfully. The antique Australian photos and maps tastefully decorate the walls of the establishment, providing guests with visual aids to further add to the experience.

To compliment the Australian cuisine, the bistro serves up credible Australian beverages, such as the famous fosters Lager, an iconic beer down under. The cocktail menu is ingeniously playful with the beverage names, for instance Paul Hogan is named after an iconic Australian actor and comedian and Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again is named after the song by Australian rock band, The Angels.

To top off the culinary culture shock, guests have a selection of ideal Australian desserts, such as the ever-loving Pavlova, a fresh delightful favourite in the land down under.
