Most people don't give much thought to their hangers. Donna Zalter isn't most people.
Known affectionately as "The Hanger Lady," Zalter is the founder of All Hung Up Hangers, a company built around a deceptively simple idea: If we invest in the clothes hanging in our closets, why do we pay so little attention to what they're hanging on?
It's a question that first occurred to Zalter during her career in luxury real estate. After spending years touring and showcasing beautiful homes, she began noticing something unexpected. Even multimillion-dollar properties with elaborate custom closets often contained the same jumble of wire dry-cleaning hangers, bulky plastic styles and mismatched hangers collected over the years.
The closets were meticulously designed, but one of their most functional elements seemed to be an afterthought.
Zalter saw an opportunity.
She founded All Hung Up Hangers with the goal of turning an ordinary household essential into something more functional, durable and aesthetically pleasing. The idea was simple: create hangers that people would actually want to see in their closets.
That attention to an often-overlooked detail has now reached a national audience. All Hung Up Hangers was recently featured on "Good Morning America" as part of ABC Secret Savings, where viewers were introduced to the brand's wood and slim plastic hanger collections.
For Zalter, the growing attention reinforces something she has believed from the beginning: Small changes can have an outsized impact on how we experience our homes.
Anyone who has wrestled with a crowded closet knows that organization isn't just about having more space. It's about using the space you already have more effectively.
Bulky hangers can take up valuable room. Flimsy styles can bend under heavier garments. Slippery hangers leave shirts and dresses on the floor, while poorly shaped versions can create unwanted bumps in sweaters, jackets and tops.
Then there's the visual impact.
Walk into a beautifully merchandised boutique and you'll rarely see five different types of hangers competing for attention. Uniformity creates a sense of order and allows the clothing itself to become the focus.
It's a concept that translates surprisingly well to the home.
Replacing mismatched hangers with a single cohesive style can immediately make a closet appear cleaner and more intentional without renovating a single shelf or buying another storage bin.
Zalter approached the category by considering both form and function.
All Hung Up Hangers' luxury wood designs combine a slim silhouette with solid construction and non-slip shoulder pads intended to help garments remain securely in place. The brand's proprietary slim plastic hangers offer a lightweight, space-saving alternative designed for everyday wardrobes.
For Zalter, durability was especially important. Hangers are used every single day, yet many are treated as disposable. Creating something built to last longer was part of rethinking the category altogether.
And while functionality drives the design, appearance matters too.
A closet is one of the first places many of us visit every morning. When clothing is neatly arranged and everything has its place, getting dressed can feel less like searching through clutter and more like shopping your own wardrobe.
Perhaps the most interesting part of Zalter's story isn't really about hangers at all.
It's about noticing something everyone else has learned to overlook.
Entrepreneurs are often encouraged to search for the next groundbreaking idea, but innovation doesn't always require inventing an entirely new category. Sometimes it comes from looking at an ordinary product and asking a very simple question: Could this be better?
For Zalter, that product happened to be the humble clothes hanger.
Today, as "The Hanger Lady," she's making the case that the smallest details in our homes deserve attention too.
Because sometimes upgrading your space doesn't require a renovation, a designer or a massive budget.
Sometimes it starts with what's already hanging in your closet.
