You’ll know the minute you turn off the main highway to enter the Belmond Maroma Resort and Spa that you’re in for something special. As you continue to drive deeper and deeper on a dirt road through the lush mangrove jungle it becomes evident that this resort is, quite literally, a secret hideaway.

Ancient Indian merchants, once called Banias, used to gather this certain type of tree with enormous leaves providing soothing shade and quiet shelters, so that banias could rest and go on with their trades. Such tradition went on to be tales for foreign travelers to tell, and the tree took the name of the banias and became the banyan tree.
