Salvador Dali Tea at The St. Regis New York

HISTORY OF AFTERNOON TEA

The ritual of Afternoon Tea was brought to The St. Regis New York by Caroline Astor, the hotel's matriarch and Grand Dame of New York Society. Each afternoon, Mrs. Astor would invite a select few of her closest friends into her drawing room to catch up on the latest gossip behind closed doors – and always over a decadent selection of sandwiches, cakes and pastries. Today, this ritual has become a signature St. Regis tradition, coming alive each afternoon in New York as well as at St. Regis properties around the world.

SALVADOR DALI

Salvador Dalf, a prominent Spanish surrealist, lived at The St. Regis New York with his wife, Gala, for many winters starting in the late 1930s. He was famous for his pet ocelot, Babou, who roamed the marble halls on a leash. Dalf frequently entertained guests and potential art patrons, and he was known for hosting many extravagant parties with artists including Andy Warhol, whom he often met in the King Cole Bar.

The items included in our Dali tea service are inspired by his most famous paintings and Spanish heritage.

Stop by St. Regis New York, starting from Monday, to get a cup of splendid cup of Afternoon Tea.
