Giovanni Rana: A True Taste of Italy

Giovanni Rana: A True Taste of Italy

By Anna Ryan

Italy, best known for its impeccable pasta dishes, has made its way to New York City.  With fresh, hand-made pasta, Giovanni Rana gives you a true taste of Italy. Not only does the menu capture the essence of Italy, the hand-picked artifacts transported from Italy enhance the Italian experience.  Among these artifacts are Giovanni's first tools for making his hand-made pasta, 200 graters from Italian flea markets, and Giovanni's red motorbike, on which he delivered his hand-made pastas, hangs next to an exposed brick wall by the bar.

The year 1962 was the beginning of this family owned and operated restaurant in Italy. Giovanni Rana began his career making fresh, hand-made pasta in his kitchen and created unique dishes to serve to the local residents.  Giovanni Rana soon became well-known, and his brand caught on in New York City. Chef Giancarlo Perbellini, a family friend of the Rana family, and Chef Francesco Berardinelli keep the tradition of making fresh, hand-made pasta on a daily basis alive and continue in the search for new, flavorful Italian dishes. For those wondering how this fresh pasta is made, Giovanni Rana offers pasta classes for children every Sunday at 10 a.m. and adult pasta classes regularly.

The ever flavorful menu includes a variety of appetizers, antipasti, pasta and more.  Among the appetizers, carciofi alla giudia offers guests an exceptional taste of fried artichokes. If you're looking for a more classic taste, the taragna polenta fries give a flavorful twist to the original French fry.

Giovanni Rana takes pride in their pasta menu offering a variety of mouth-watering dishes.  From the asparagus and ricotta ravioli to the lobster mezzaluna, there is never a dull tasting meal.  The succulent taste of real Italian cuisine is demonstrated through dishes like the tagliatelle limone and the cappelletti al prosciutto. Don't forget their savory desserts to compliment your meal.

For all you brunch-lovers out there, Giovanni Rana offers an authentic Italian brunch menu that is sure to bring you back. If take-out is more your style, this restaurant keeps you on your toes with their changing "takeaway menu." They have pasta of the week, pasta of the month, and pasta of tradition. And what would a menu be without dessert? Their tiramisu is a great way to top off your order.

Giovanni Rana knows the importance of creating unique Italian dishes and encourages customers to experiment making their own meals. A Casa Mia, a shop situated off the dining room, provides customers with pantry staples needed to create their own Italian dishes in the comfort of their own homes.

If you want true Italian cuisine that won't disappoint, make your way to Giovanni Rana for an experience you won't forget. •
