Downtown Fort Lauderdale took a meaningful step forward in its urban evolution with the debut of the newly revitalized Riverwalk—a preview that marked the first public milestone in the comprehensive reimagining of Huizenga Park, set to be fully completed by the end of 2025.
Held on Wednesday, June 11, the exclusive preview welcomed donors and project collaborators for a ceremonial stroll through the upgraded stretch of the Riverwalk. Hosted by the Fort Lauderdale Downtown Development Authority (DDA), the event highlighted a shared vision years in the making: to transform Huizenga Park into the city’s signature gathering space.
A Park Reimagined for Today’s Downtown
What began in 1990 as a central green space in Fort Lauderdale is now undergoing its most ambitious upgrade in decades. The reimagined Huizenga Park—framed by East Las Olas Boulevard and the New River—is poised to redefine how locals and visitors experience Downtown.
During the evening celebration, Steve Hudson, Chairman of the Huizenga Park Foundation, delivered remarks on the project's scope and impact, calling it one of the most significant public investments in Fort Lauderdale’s Riverwalk since its original debut. His message underscored a broader mission: to build a public space that is not only beautiful, but usable, safe, and designed with intention.
A First Look: Greenery, Legacy, and Accessibility
The newly revealed section of Riverwalk showcases more than 315 freshly planted shrubs, 25 new canopy trees and palms, and the careful reintegration of 249 etched bricks, which preserve the memory and names of past donors and community contributors. The most symbolic element, however, may be the 250-year-old Bicentennial Liberty Oak Tree, standing tall as a living monument to the park’s historic and civic significance.
The path is more than just scenic—it’s functional and inviting. The revitalized Riverwalk was designed with a focus on comfort and accessibility, setting the stage for a civic space that welcomes residents of all ages and abilities.
A Collaborative Vision for the Future
The Fort Lauderdale DDA—established by the Florida State Legislature in 1965—has long championed infrastructure and beautification projects that serve the city’s rapidly growing urban core. Under the leadership of its seven-member board, the DDA continues to steward initiatives that balance development with public engagement.
Through collaboration with public agencies, private partners, and philanthropic supporters, the DDA has helped ensure that Downtown Fort Lauderdale’s growth includes spaces for leisure, community connection, and cultural expression. The Huizenga Park transformation is a clear reflection of that mission in action.
As construction continues, residents can expect the final version of the park to be far more than a typical urban green. The completed site will be a thoughtfully designed destination with programming, shade, and multifunctional space—reflecting the needs and aspirations of Fort Lauderdale today.
