Things To Do In Miami During Your Downtime

While Miami may be known for its sandy beaches and extensive nightlife, many locals and tourists can agree that the best activities go beyond the beach and bar. With an extensive range of booming culinary opportunities and year-round attractions, you won't be short of activities to fill your downtime in Miami.

From stargazing through telescopes at the Park & Nature Centre to absorbing the rich art scene of Wynwood Walls, your only regret will be not booking a trip to Miami sooner.

Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science

Perfect for curious minds of all ages, the new Frost Museum of Science spans a massive 250,000 square feet and consists of four interesting and educational buildings – the Aquarium, the Frost Planetarium, and the North and West Wings.

Open year-round with many exciting exhibits, this state-of-the-art facility includes many interactive opportunities, a mindblowing 500,000-gallon Gulf Stream aquarium, and a planetarium dome with monthly laser light shows.

Vizcaya Museum & Gardens

Considered by most as the number one attraction in Miami, the picturesque Italian Renaissance-style villa located in lush Coconut Grove is a must-see for all visitors and locals alike. The meticulously landscaped gardens, sprawling bayfront terrace, and impressive homestead are a sight to behold.

The pristine 43 acres of property, along with an impressive collection of European antiques and decorative work from the 16th to the 19th century, creates the ideal backdrop for the perfect photographic opportunity or the best place to quietly take in the sights and sounds of this majestic building.

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden

The Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is one of South Florida's natural jewels. This impressive 83-acre garden, named after the well-known botanist and Miami resident David Fairchild, is a tropical slice of paradise. Explore a lush rainforest with a running stream, a uniquely mesmerizing sunken garden, beautiful vistas, a healthy vine pergola, and the museum of plant exploration.

With plenty of space to walk around and explore, it is one of the best ways to spend a warm and sunny day in nature, armed with your water bottle and proper sunscreen. And when the afternoon sun becomes too intense, seek shade and comfort in one of the many shady corners around the property.

Broken Shaker Cocktail Bar

For many Miami locals, the Broken Shaker Cocktail Bar is the place that started it all. This tropical-themed OG cocktail bar is perfect for a night out with friends or a sultry date night. Their wide range of drinks offers delicious seasonal flavors and bang-for-your-buck options that will satisfy a group of any size.

For a longer night, groove upstairs at 27 Restaurant's Eagle Room for more dancing and fun. Don't call it a night.

LIV Miami

LIV Miami is the biggest and most famous nightclub at Fontainebleau Miami Beach. After the pandemic closure, Miami's nightlife crown jewel returns better than ever.

Playing host to a variety of top-tier talent while drawing in some of the biggest celebrities, you will hope the night never ends. Be prepared for premium entry and drinks that will set you back a fair penny. But the unforgettable experience more than makes up for it.

Wynwood Walls

Wynwood Walls is the location for the first and only outdoor museum in Miami dedicated to street art. A decade-old Wynwood Arts District hub boasts over 50 murals by world-renowned artists, elevating graffiti art with life and legitimacy.

Capture vibrant colors, cultural significance, and space for Instagram-worthy photos of the artwork firsthand. Grab your camera guilt-free.

Taking in the Stars

When you think of Miami, stargazing may not come to mind. Though challenging, you can discover pockets of the night sky filled with countless stars beyond counting.

Visit Matheson Hammock Park and Bill Sadowski Park; top spots outside Miami for city visitors. Matheson is one of the darkest spots in all of Miami, making it ideal for stargazing. The park closes at 5 p.m., but you can park and stargaze as late as you want.

The Park & Nature Center is an observatory site for the Southern Cross Astronomical Society. Public Saturday observations include telescope use; bring your own or use one from SCAS.

LoanDepot Baseball Park

LoanDepot Baseball Park is the ideal place for sports fans to watch the Miami Marlins and immerse in American sport. This modern facility has a weather-conscious retractable roof and ample parking, allowing events to take place no matter the weather. If sports aren't your focus, the venue features concerts, shows, and private events. Check their calendar for details.
