Brittany Murphy’s Former Los Angeles Home Back on Market for $18M Amid Haunting Rumors and Tragic History

The infamous Hollywood Hills estate, associated with tragedy and mystery, returns to the market with a new look.

The Hollywood Hills mansion, once owned by late “Clueless” star Brittany Murphy, is back on the market and listed for $18 million.

Known for its tragic and mysterious history, the property has become a subject of fascination for fans and paranormal enthusiasts alike. Despite a complete rebuild in 2013, the house’s dark legacy continues to capture public interest.

Many complaints came from the homeowners who lived in the mansion, including Murphy, who bought the house in 2003, claiming it was haunted and experienced paranormal encounters. Still, no proof has come out other than her tragic death in 2009 caused by pneumonia.

A Home Shrouded in Tragedy and Mystery

Located on Rising Glen Road, the property was purchased by Murphy in 2003 for $3.85 million from pop star Britney Spears.

However, it wasn’t long before the home’s troubling reputation began to emerge. Britney Spears reportedly fled the property after experiencing what her former makeup artist described as a paranormal encounter.

According to claims made during a 2021 podcast, Spears believed that “bad spirits” were trying to push her down the stairs, leading her to leave the house and sell it to Murphy permanently.

Murphy, known for her roles in “Clueless,” “Uptown Girls,” and “Girl, Interrupted,” reportedly had a complicated relationship with her home.

In a 2010 interview, her husband, Simon Monjack, revealed that Murphy often referred to the house as “unlucky” and preferred staying at the Beverly Hills Hotel to returning to the mansion. The couple had even planned to move to New York before her untimely death.

Murphy passed away in the home in December 2009 at the age of 32. Her death was attributed to pneumonia, anemia, and prescription drug intoxication.

Just five months later, Monjack also died in the house under eerily similar circumstances. These tragedies sparked conspiracy theories, with some speculating that black mold in the home was responsible. However, the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office quickly dismissed these claims and said there was no evidence of these theories.

The home’s troubled history made it difficult to sell. After Murphy’s death, her mother, Sharon Murphy, sold the property in 2011 for $2.7 million—a significant loss compared to the $3.85 million Brittany had paid. The original house was torn down two years later, and an entirely new modern mansion was built.

The current structure is a six-bedroom, 8.5-bathroom mansion on a 1.18-acre lot boasting 9,400 square feet of living space.

It features a chef’s kitchen, a butler’s pantry, multiple indoor and outdoor entertainment areas, and a luxurious primary suite with dual bathrooms, walk-in closets, and a wraparound terrace. Despite its transformation and renovation, the house’s connection to Murphy and its chilling history intrigues buyers and onlookers.

The mansion has changed hands multiple times over the years. It sold for $14.53 million in 2017 and was listed again in 2019 for $17.99 million before selling for $12.2 million in 2020. Now, the property is back on the market with an asking price of $17.99 million.

The listing emphasizes the home’s modern upgrades, including elegant stone and tile finishes, a redesigned exterior, and enhanced interiors.

The primary suite was recently renovated to include a dedicated vanity room and additional amenities for luxury buyers. The expansive outdoor spaces make it ideal to host lavish events.
