With March deadlines for this year's major design competitions just days away, we sat down with Mengmeng Chen, accomplished product/UX designer, to gain insights from her remarkable 2024 award season. Chen's AI-powered cooking platform FOODAI captured six international design awards last year, and she agreed to share her winning strategies and creative approach with designers rushing to finalize their submissions. "I remember the pressure of those final days before deadlines," Chen says, "so I'm happy to offer perspective to this year's participants."
"I wanted to create something that truly transforms how people interact with technology in their kitchens," says Chen, whose creation captured a remarkable six major awards last year, including honors from the NY Digital Awards, London Design Awards, and TITAN Innovation Awards.
FOODAI reimagines cooking assistance through technology. The platform introduces four specialized AI assistants—Italian, Japanese, Mexican, and Vegan—each offering personalized culinary guidance tailored to individual preferences, dietary restrictions, and available ingredients.
“The platform learns your tastes over time. It can suggest modifications to recipes on the fly or generate entirely new options until you find exactly what you're looking for.”

FOODAI combines sophisticated technology with an intuitive interface. The app's ingredient scanning feature allows users to point their smartphone camera at items in their refrigerator, with the AI suggesting creative meal possibilities—reducing food waste while encouraging culinary exploration.
"Good design disappears," Chen notes. "The technology should feel like a natural extension of your cooking process, not an interruption."
Chen's thoughtful approach to human-centered AI design earned FOODAI recognition across several of the industry's most prestigious competitions in 2024. The project won the highly competitive NYX Awards in the Mobile App - Food & Drink category, captured Silver at the TITAN Innovation Awards for Innovation in Design and User Experience, and secured another Silver at the Vega Digital Awards for Best Use of AI & Machine Learning. Additional wins came from the French Design Awards for Conceptual Design in Artificial Intelligence, the London Design Awards for User Experience Design, and the NY Digital Awards for Apps & Softwares. These top-tier international accolades confirm Chen's position among the industry's elite designers.
"Receiving this kind of recognition from the industry validates our approach to designing AI that enhances rather than replaces the human experience," says Chen.
Chen's professional achievements began at Parsons School of Design, where she earned her BFA in Product Design before completing a Master of Science in Integrated Digital Media at New York University. This dual background in physical and digital design gives her a unique perspective on creating seamless user experiences.
Currently working as a product designer at Vibrant Wellness, Chen has made significant contributions to healthcare technology, including redesigning laboratory reports that led to an 82% increase in order rates year-over-year.
“My goal has always been to create experiences that bridge sophisticated technology with intuitive human interaction. Whether it's healthcare or cooking, the principles remain the same—make complex systems accessible, personalized, and meaningful.”

As designers finalize their entries for this year's competitions, Chen offers practical advice based on her experience.
"The strongest AI applications solve real human problems in ways that feel natural and even delightful," Chen reflects. "Judges respond to work that demonstrates thoughtful integration of technology into daily life."
For designers working on AI-driven product concepts, Chen recommends: "Focus on the human experience first. Technology should make people's lives better, not simply automate tasks."
Chen also shares tactical submission advice: "Present your concept clearly, emphasize the user research that informed your decisions, and articulate how your design addresses genuine user needs." Her parting thought for anxious award applicants: "Remember that judges look for innovation combined with practical usability—designs that push boundaries while remaining accessible to users."
With submission deadlines looming, Chen's FOODAI demonstrates how innovative design thinking can transform technologies into experiences that genuinely improve daily life—the kind of work that earns recognition across international competitions.
