There are hotels, and then there are hotels that make you rearrange your entire perception of a city. My wife Courtney and I recently had the pleasure of spending a night at The Newbury Boston, and by the time we checked out, we understood exactly why this Back Bay landmark has become the address in Boston for travelers who want luxury, location, and genuine hospitality in equal measure.
From the moment we stepped through the doors at 1 Newbury Street, it was clear this stay would be something special. The staff greeted us warmly, checked us in with the kind of unhurried attentiveness that immediately puts you at ease, and had us settled into our room in minutes. Waiting for us was a beautifully plated dessert, a small, thoughtful gesture that told us this hotel pays attention to the details that actually matter. It’s the kind of welcome that turns “checking in” into the start of an experience, and it set the tone for everything that followed.
The Newbury sits directly across from the Boston Public Garden, at the corner of Newbury and Arlington Streets in the heart of Back Bay, arguably the single best location in the city. Step outside and you’re immediately among the brownstone boutiques, galleries, and cafés that make Newbury Street one of the most walkable, elegant shopping corridors in the country. A few minutes in the other direction and you’re strolling along Commonwealth Avenue’s tree-lined mall, or wandering the swan boats and manicured paths of the Public Garden and Boston Common. Few hotels anywhere put you this close to a city’s soul; here, it’s simply out your front door.
Back Bay is one of the most walkable neighborhoods in Boston, and staying at The Newbury made getting around effortless. We covered most of our sightseeing on foot, with the Public Garden, Beacon Hill, and the Theater District all within easy walking distance. When we wanted to venture farther, the hotel’s location near the Arlington T stop made hopping on the subway simple, and rideshares and taxis were never more than a minute or two away. For a city that can otherwise feel like a maze of one-way streets, The Newbury’s position made navigating Boston refreshingly simple.
If the rooms are the heart of The Newbury, the food and beverage program is its soul. We were hosted for lunch at Street Bar, the hotel’s ground-floor restaurant with sweeping views over the Public Garden. The atmosphere was warm and lively without ever feeling loud, and watching the Garden’s greenery and passersby while enjoying a beautifully composed lunch menu is an experience we’re still thinking about.
The next morning, breakfast at Contessa, the hotel’s glass-enclosed rooftop restaurant on the 17th floor, was nothing short of spectacular. Designed with sweeping panoramic views of the Back Bay skyline and the Public Garden below, Contessa’s Italian-inspired décor (think grand Northern Italian villa meets sun-drenched, modern glass terrace) is as much a visual experience as a culinary one. Between the retractable glass roof, the skyline stretching out in every direction, and a breakfast menu that struck the perfect balance between indulgent and refined, it was, without exaggeration, one of the most memorable meals we’ve had in any hotel.
Boston rewards exploration, and The Newbury’s location makes it the ideal launch point. The Freedom Trail is easily accessible on foot, as are the Public Garden’s swan boats, the shops and galleries of Newbury Street, and the brownstone streets of Back Bay perfect for an afternoon wander. History lovers can walk to Beacon Hill in minutes, while those craving green space have the Public Garden and Boston Common essentially as an extension of the hotel’s front lawn.
We visited in the summer, and the timing could not have been better. The weather was gorgeous: warm, sunny, and perfect for walking the Garden or enjoying an outdoor moment at Street Bar. Summer in Boston means long daylight hours, blooming gardens, and an energy in Back Bay that makes every walk feel like part of the experience. For travelers considering a visit, the summer months offer some of the city’s best weather alongside the full bloom of the Public Garden right across the street.
What ultimately made our stay unforgettable wasn’t just the location, the design, or even the food. It was the people. Every staff member we encountered, from check-in to our final morning at Contessa, treated us with a level of warmth and attentiveness that felt genuine rather than scripted. Whether it was the thoughtful in-room dessert, the seamless lunch at Street Bar, or the team at Contessa making sure our breakfast experience matched the extraordinary views, the hospitality at The Newbury Boston was stellar from top to bottom.
For anyone looking to experience Boston at its most elegant, with world-class dining, an unbeatable Back Bay address, and service that makes you feel like a longtime guest from the moment you arrive, The Newbury Boston isn’t just a place to stay. It’s a destination in its own right.
