In an extraordinary display of global unity, Young Musicians Unite (YMU) and the Playing For Change Foundation have collaborated to reimagine the iconic 1980s anthem, "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" by Tears for Fears. This ambitious project unites over 100 musicians, educators, and students spanning three continents, transcending cultural and geographical barriers to create something uniquely inspiring.

From the rhythms of Ghana and Rwanda to the soulful harmonies of Panama, Morocco, and the U.S., this cover is more than a song; it is a testament to the transformative power of music.

"Rearranging 'Everybody Wants to Rule the World' with our students was such a rewarding process. The song carries so much depth and meaning, and it was amazing to watch our students connect with it while adding their own unique voices. For me, this collaboration truly reflects the heart of what we stand for—breaking barriers and creating opportunities for young musicians to thrive."

Crafting a Global Anthem

This reimagined version of "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" began in Miami, where the YMU team, led by Larmer alongside Jason Matthews and Lucas Apostoleris, meticulously arranged the track. Their efforts were bolstered by the expertise of YMU alumnus Cristian Acevedo, who crafted the intricate drum and percussion arrangements.

The journey didn't stop there. The track traveled thousands of miles to communities in Ghana, Rwanda, Panama, and Morocco, where local musicians infused the piece with their unique cultural sounds and artistic interpretations. Legendary percussionist Sammy Figueroa, known for his collaborations with icons such as Miles Davis and Madonna, lent his inimitable talents, adding another layer of brilliance to this global endeavor.

"The magic of this project with Young Musicians Unite lies not just in the music, but in the unity it represents. We brought together students who had never met, separated by thousands of miles, yet they created something cohesive and beautiful. It’s proof of the extraordinary power music has to connect us all."

The initiative underscores a shared mission between YMU and Playing For Change: making music education accessible and empowering marginalized youth worldwide. Through this collaboration, music becomes a tool not only for personal growth but also for fostering global empathy and understanding.

YMU, a Miami-based nonprofit, provides comprehensive music education solutions to Title 1 schools, ensuring students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds have access to high-quality resources, trained instructors, and instruments. Playing For Change Foundation extends this vision globally, leveraging music as a unifying force to address challenges in communities across low and middle-income countries.

"Working with Playing for Change has been such an inspiring experience. Seeing how music brings people together and gives our students a platform to shine is a powerful reminder of why I love what I do. Together, we’re celebrating young talent and sharing a message of hope and possibility through this amazing partnership—and after the incredible success of this project, we’re already hard at work on an exciting follow-up that we can’t wait to share."
