This time, the house expands its iconic Tambour collection with two dazzling new references: the Tambour Yellow Gold with Onyx Dial and Saffron Sapphires and the Tambour Platinum with Gradiated Sapphires and Rubies. Each is a limited-edition triumph in design, materiality, and mechanical performance, offering a kaleidoscopic take on time—one that captures the pulse of contemporary luxury collectors.

These two references arrive just in time to maintain momentum following the 2023 Tambour silhouette refresh, which introduced slimmer cases, integrated bracelets, and a contemporary unisex appeal. Now, Louis Vuitton leans fully into the lapidary arts, bringing precious stones and precision mechanics together in watches that are equal parts statement and heirloom.

For the first time in the Tambour lineage, Louis Vuitton introduces hard stone into its dialwork. The 40mm case, cast in radiant 18K yellow gold, is punctuated with 48 baguette-cut saffron sapphires totaling approximately 2.22 carats. Their fiery warmth is inspired by a 1911 “Vuittonite” trunk—proof that heritage always finds a way to resurface in the brand’s lexicon.

But the true star is the dial: a meticulously crafted medley of Brazilian onyx pieces, each one polished and shaped to perfection before being set with 11 saffron sapphire hour markers. Achieving this result requires a process that tolerates no error. Every onyx slice—thin, fragile, and unique—must be machined and polished with surgical precision, culminating in a seamless inky surface that appears almost liquid beneath the sapphire crystal.

The 18K yellow gold hands are filled with Super-LumiNova® to ensure legibility against the deep onyx backdrop, while a lacquered black sub-dial at six o’clock adds visual balance. The watch’s integrated bracelet, also in 18K yellow gold, features vertically brushed and polished links that catch the light with subtle fluidity. Limited to just 30 pieces, each one is individually numbered “1 of 30” on the caseback—a discreet yet assertive reminder of exclusivity.

Its 40mm platinum case may share dimensions with its yellow gold sibling, but it takes 30% more time to machine due to the metal’s density. Even polishing the platinum bezel, crown, and bracelet links is a Herculean task, requiring twice the time as softer metals. That effort, however, sets the stage for a bezel and indices lit with a smooth rainbow of 59 baguette-cut sapphires and rubies sourced from Sri Lanka and Mozambique—no small feat considering the difficulty of matching purples and greens in natural corundum stones.

The gradient theme carries into the dial, where a silvered opaline finish contrasts beautifully with white gold hands and indices, the latter set with 11 additional color-shifting gemstones. A snailed sub-dial at six o’clock keeps the aesthetic grounded. The platinum bracelet is finished with a folding clasp in 18K white gold, completing this masterwork in tone-on-tone sophistication.

Flip the case, and you’ll find a surprise: inset into the open caseback is a single 1.6mm saffron sapphire—a secret signature for Louis Vuitton’s platinum pieces going forward.
