9 Steps To Take Now To Look And Feel Great This Summer

Resident Contributor

Summer is just around the corner! So, these last weeks of spring are a great time of the year to implement new routines that will help you look and feel your best when the warmer season comes around.  And, no, we are not talking about getting a “bikini body” — every body is a bikini body and you enjoy the summer season in full confidence!

However, the right lifestyle choices and routines can help you improve your physical and mental health, helping you make the most of the exciting months ahead. In this guide, we’ll look at a few tips and tricks that can help you get started!

Focus on Hydration

Hydration is something we all overlook, but it plays a major  role in how we feel and look. Some of the benefits of proper hydration include:

  • Improves skin elasticity and glow, reducing fine lines

  • Supports healthy blood circulation, important for circulatory and heart health

  • Helps in digestion and supports nutrient absorption

  • Regulates body temperature (especially in the summer’s heath!)

  • Support healthy joint cartilage, which is essential to cushion bones

  • Supports kidney function in flushing out toxins

  • Prevents headaches and boosts brain function

  • Increases energy levels and reduces fatigue

  • Supports healthy metabolism and weight management

While the amount of water depends on different factors, you should aim for at least 8 glasses (about 2 liters) per day—or more if you’re active, in hot weather, or sweating a lot.

Refresh Your Skincare Routine

Next up, let’s talk about your skincare routine. Summer and winter weather have different requirements. In summer, you may opt for lighter makeup products that are water resistant while allowing the skin to breathe. Ideally,  you should avoid heavy makeup that can cause skin irritation, especially when exposed to sun.

Of course, be sure to wear sunscreen daily and protect your skin when in the sun! High-quality, natural makeup options, especially those that incorporate UV protection, should be your go-to alternative!

Plan Your Laser Hair Removal Sessions

If you have been wanting to invest in laser hair removal, it is important that you have your sessions planned in advance. In fact, you may need more than one appointment to achieve your desired results. It is recommended that you are not exposed to strong sunlight between appointments. So, consider scheduling your sessions over the next few weeks, so that you can be ready for the upcoming beach days!

Eat Seasonal Foods

Of course, getting ready for summer is not about going on a strict diet. However, nutrition plays a major role in the way we feel, influencing our overall health and energy levels. Because of this, you may consider prioritizing proper nutrition across the seasons. We are not talking about counting calories—but more about prioritizing natural, seasonal, and whole-grain foods that will provide all the nutrients your body needs to function and thrive.

Naturally, if you are looking to improve your nutrition, a specialized nutritionist should be your first port of call. However, a diet rich in unprocessed, seasonal foods, and a balanced mix of fibre, protein, and carbohydrates can support overall health and weight management.

Prioritize Mental Health

Mental health has a powerful influence on our physical wellbeing and even appearance! And, as summer comes around, it is important to be aware of the impact that seasonal affective disorder (SAD) can have. This is certainly more common in late fall and winter, but some people also suffer from increased anxiety, stress, and depressive symptoms as summer begins to approach.

If you have noticed that your mood is changing or you feel more irritable at the end of spring, consider taking stems to improve or safeguard your mental health. These certainly include partnering with a therapist. But certain lifestyle choices can help:

  • Ensure you are getting 7-9 hours of sleep each night

  • Practice mindfulness activities like yoga and meditation

  • Exercise daily

  • Focus on nutrition

  • Spend time outdoors

  • Limit screen time and social media

  • Take breaks and allow yourself time to relax

  • Engage in hobbies or creative activities

Get Moving and Spend More Time Outdoors

Exercise is important, as it improves our mental and physical health. It helps with weight and energy management, boosts cardiovascular health, strengthens muscles, and even triggers the release of “feel-good” hormones, like endorphins.

When it comes to making exercise part of your routine, a great tip is to find an activity that you genuinely love. It could be about practicing yoga, strolling through a local park, swimming at the beach, or jogging. Find an option that fits your needs and routine, and commit to moving your body every day.

Get Your Summer Plans Organized

Whether you are planning to visit a bucket list destination or spend your summer weekends camping with your family, be sure to get your plans organized in advance. This is important because, while vacations are supposed to be fun, they also come with a change in routine and logistical challenges that can add extra stress. Getting everything booked months before the departure date can help you relax just before your trip and make the most of the experience as a whole.

Update Your Hair for Summer

A simple but powerful upgrade before summer is to upgrade your hair! Opt for a lighter, easy-to-maintain haircut that will look great naturally, without having to spend hours dealing with a curling iron or hair dryer. This may involve more of a “drastic” change, but you’ll be thankful when you can enjoy your beach days and transition between venues without too much effort!

Plan a Wardrobe Refresh

Last but not least, refresh your wardrobe! It could involve washing and storing your winter outfits and replacing them with summer pieces. You may also upgrade a few outfits with new items, but be sure to prioritize high-quality, natural, and breathable fabrics. These will be your best friends during hot summer days, allowing you to feel great while also staying comfortable as you stroll through the city center or visit a local seaside retreat.

Just make sure to prioritize quality over quantity, find items that fit you perfectly and match your style, and create a capsule wardrobe that is easy to enjoy and maintain!
