The Allure of the Rails: Exploring the World of Luxury Train Travel

It's something that not many of us ever get a chance to do, but personally, I think we should change that! There’s something undeniably magical about stepping aboard a luxury train. It conjures up nostalgia for an era that none of us actually got to experience (that's called anemoia - if you're interested). It's an era when travel wasn’t just about the destination - it was an elegant affair in itself, one that few could afford. Private compartments lined with polished wood, meals served under the soft glow of crystal chandeliers, and the rhythmic hum of wheels on rails. Captured your imagination? Let's scratch the surface of the world of luxury train travel.

The Iconic Venice Simplon-Orient-Express

Dubbed 'the king of trains and the train of kings,' I probably don't have to explain that the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is a veritable legend of luxury travel. The train was commissioned in the 1920s, and ever since this rolling palace has been transporting passengers across Europe in inimitable style. Its art deco carriages have been meticulously restored, so it really is like walking back a century when you step inside - it exudes an opulent charm that can't be faked. Polished mahogany panels, Lalique glass accents, all of the furnishings are uniquely of the art deco period - and stunning.

The routes vary, but the most popular itinerary connects London to Venice - who could resist? There's nothing on Earth quite like winding through the Alps and the staggering views this affords you. Better still, the quiet ambiance of steam travel isn't lost, as though the steam engine has long since been replaced, the Orient Express now runs on electric. This makes for a surprisingly quiet journey, one where you can properly reflect on the beauty of the experience. I'm yet to mention the dining! Onboard, guests enjoy multi-course meals prepared by renowned chefs, all washed down with a (pretty expensive) glass or two of champagne. It's worth taking a quick trip to the bar just to soak up the atmosphere. There's always a pianist playing.

The Regal Maharajas’ Express

Looking for something a little further afield? In India, the Maharajas’ Express redefines extravagance. Inspired by the Indian royals, this train has interiors inspired by the sheer grandeur of the country’s palaces. Every suite boasts stunning (incredibly intricate) artwork, as well as luxurious silk textiles that India is so famous for. Throw in all the modern conveniences that you could ask for - and you've got the epitome of luxury train travel.

In terms of destinations, there's barely an Indian icon that you can't make your way to. From the Taj Mahal to the palaces of Rajasthan - you can see it all on this long distance network. As you travel, you can enjoy experiences curated just for you - be it a private safari, a dance performance, or simply a sumptuous dinner - your journey is perfectly tailored to you.

The Scenic Rocky Mountaineer

Our American readers don't have to travel far to experience an out-of-this-world train ride. The Rocky Mountaineer offers a world-class experience in the heart of Canada. This train is like a cinema screen for the country’s most dramatic landscapes, from the towering peaks of the Rockies to lush forests, waterfalls, and winding rivers. Why is this the number one sightseeing train? Glass. Domed. Carriages. That's right, each carriage allows for totally uninterrupted panoramic views. If you'd like a little something to nibble on while you enjoy the vistas then don't worry, there's gourmet dining on board too. Choosing a route is the hardest part of this journey, but if you need a hand, my personal favorite is “Journey Through the Clouds”.

Luxury Train Travel in Literature, Film, and Gaming

It's no surprise that luxury train travel has inspired many a creative mind. It can be fun to bring a film, book, or game along with you that was inspired by the train journey you're taking. Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express is perhaps the most iconic example, turning the train itself into a central character in a suspenseful and sophisticated mystery. But Hitchcock’s The Lady Vanishes and The Darjeeling Limited are also brilliant choices. In terms of gaming, titles like Blazin’ Rails available at online casino Betway, bring the spirit of these legendary journeys into a playful, digital format. The format you choose is up to you, but it certainly adds something to the experience, to be seeing it through someone else's lens.

Glamour Without the Price Tag

Some of these routes are undoubtedly expensive, but there are others that don't require a royal budget. Trains like the Belmond British Pullman bring vintage charm to shorter journeys across the UK, while in South Africa, the Rovos Rail offers relatively affordable packages that still deliver a high-end experience.
