Kennebunkport’s Breakwater Inn has long been a symbol of refined coastal living, where the Kennebunk River meets the Atlantic and time slows to the rhythm of the tide. Now, the historic 35-room boutique hotel is inviting guests to immerse themselves in Maine’s most celebrated flavors with the debut of its Maine Food Tour—an exclusive package pairing a two-night stay in the newly refreshed inn with a guided road trip to the region’s most beloved dining destinations.

More than a sampling of iconic dishes, this is an orchestrated experience: private car service to each stop, VIP seating with waterfront views, and a guaranteed table at some of Maine’s most in-demand eateries. With the season’s freshest catches, locally grown produce, and signature craft beverages, the journey offers an insider’s taste of the state’s culinary heritage.

A Waterfront Retreat with Timeless Appeal

The Breakwater Inn reopened on July 1, 2025, following a full renovation of its Harbor Building. While the 1880s cottage architecture remains a nod to its storied past, interiors—updated by Hurlbutt Designs—now reflect a modern nautical elegance, pairing crisp coastal décor with luxury linens and custom finishes. The highlight for Maine Food Tour guests: the King Suite, located on the third floor, complete with a raised seating area framed by a bay window, a private balcony overlooking the Kennebunk River and Atlantic Ocean, and serene harbor views from sunrise to sunset.

Positioned just outside downtown Kennebunkport, the inn offers a peaceful escape, yet remains within strolling distance of Dock Square’s cafés, galleries, and boutiques. On property, Adirondack chairs line the waterfront lawn, Port Fish & Chophouse serves locally inspired dinners and a lively happy hour, and Mabel’s Pantry offers classic breakfasts to start the day.

Classic Maine Lobster Rolls

A Progressive Feast of Maine’s Signature Dishes

The Maine Food Tour begins on the first evening of the stay with dinner at Mabel’s Lobster Claw, a Kennebunkport institution loved by locals and visiting celebrities. Signature dishes include The Dutchess—scallops, shrimp, and lobster in a garlic wine sauce—the indulgent Lobster Risotto with mushrooms and spinach, and a golden Fried or Blackened Haddock Sandwich. The finale is a slice of homemade blueberry pie, crafted from wild Maine blueberries and crowned with whipped cream or ice cream.

The following morning, the culinary road trip unfolds. Guests start at Mabel’s Pantry for signature Maine Blueberry Pancakes, then pick up provisions from Kport Provisions before heading south along Maine’s storied coastline. Each stop offers a distinctive taste of the state’s culinary personality:

  • Robert’s Maine Grill in Kittery serves the iconic Lobster Roll—either hot with butter or chilled with mayo—or Fried Maine Cheese, paired with a Bloody Mary crowned with jumbo shrimp.

  • Bob’s Clam Hut, a 1956 legend, plates its Bob’s Style Clams in a secret seasoning blend, complemented by a crisp Tributary Pale Ale.

  • Harbor Burger Shack offers a Surf & Turf Burger topped with a crab cake, alongside a Chocolate Whoopie Pie shake for a playful indulgence.

  • The Maine Catch in Ogunquit presents Clam Chowdah rich with cream and local clams, or Steamers steeped in Allagash Beer.

Returning to Breakwater Inn for happy hour, guests sip Oyster Marys on the lawn as fishing boats drift back into the harbor. The evening culminates at Port Fish & Chophouse with the Baked Stuffed Lobster—brimming with scallops, shrimp, haddock, and buttery breadcrumbs—a fitting crescendo to a two-day feast.

The Ultimate Maine Culinary Experience

Available through October 12, 2025, the Maine Food Tour package is priced from $2,500 for two guests, inclusive of the two-night King Suite stay, curated meals and drinks at each stop, transportation, and priority seating. For travelers seeking an immersive taste of Maine’s coastal culture—without the lines, the wait, or the guesswork—it’s both a luxury escape and a guided introduction to the state’s most enduring flavors.

By merging the Breakwater Inn’s storied hospitality with a progressive, hand-picked culinary itinerary, this experience captures the essence of Maine at its most delicious: unhurried, deeply rooted in place, and savored one plate at a time.
