Beyond Traditional Root Canal Treatment: Advanced Endodontics and Its Benefits for the Patient

Resident Contributor

For a long time, endodontics was synonymous with a single procedure: the dreaded root canal treatment. In collective memory, this intervention is often associated with pain, long sessions at the dentist’s office, and an almost artisanal technical process. However, the specialty has evolved — and significantly. Today, advanced endodontics combines technology, precision, and human sensitivity to offer more efficient, faster, and, above all, more comfortable solutions for the patient.

Dental surgeon Marcella Falcão de Souza Bianchin, a specialist in endodontics and a reference in the field, is one of the professionals contributing to this transformation. With an approach that combines technical knowledge, humanized care, and cutting-edge technological resources, she represents a new generation of specialists who are redefining what it means to perform a “root canal treatment.”

What Exactly Is Endodontics?

In essence, endodontics deals with the interior of the tooth, especially the dental pulp — the living tissue composed of nerves and blood vessels. When this tissue is affected by infections, deep cavities, or trauma, endodontic treatment becomes necessary. Contrary to the myth that “the tooth nerve is killed,” what actually happens is the removal of compromised tissues to preserve the tooth structure and restore its functionality.

“The focus is not to eliminate the life of the tooth, but to remove what is compromised in order to maintain what is possible,” says Dr. Marcella. She emphasizes that the goal is always to preserve the natural tooth as much as possible, avoiding unnecessary extractions and maintaining oral aesthetics and function.

Advances That Revolutionized the Practice

What differentiates contemporary endodontics from traditional practice is, above all, the use of technology. Digital radiography, computed tomography, electronic microscopes, apex locators, and endodontic motors are just some of the resources that now form part of a modern endodontist’s arsenal.

These instruments not only increase diagnostic precision but also optimize the execution of procedures. “The use of image magnification, for example, allows us to identify details invisible to the naked eye, such as accessory canals or cracks in the tooth, which considerably improves the treatment’s prognosis,” explains Marcella Travitzki.

Furthermore, these resources make it possible, in many cases, to perform treatment in a single session — an alternative that increases patient comfort without compromising quality. “Most of my endodontic treatments are done in a single session, which is a gain in both time and peace of mind for the patient,” the specialist adds.

When Traditional Treatment Isn’t Enough

Despite all advances, there are cases in which conventional root canal treatment fails. The reasons vary: from the persistence of infected pulp tissue and the presence of resistant bacteria to invisible fractures in the tooth. In these cases, surgical endodontics comes into play as a viable solution.

Endodontic surgery, or apicoectomy, consists of removing the tip of the tooth root and the inflamed surrounding tissue. It is a delicate intervention, but with the support of high-resolution imaging and modern instruments, it has become much more predictable and safe.

“Complex cases, such as teeth with unusual anatomies or with a history of multiple treatments, require a keen clinical eye and specific strategies. With current resources, we can not only diagnose better but also offer solutions previously thought impossible,” highlights Marcella.

The Importance of the Human Touch

Although technological resources are indispensable, Dr. Marcella emphasizes that humanized care remains the foundation of treatment. According to her, the moment when a patient needs endodontic treatment is usually marked by pain and anxiety. Therefore, empathy, attentive listening, and clear explanations of the procedure are essential steps.

“Each case is unique. Treatment needs to be personalized and respect the patient’s history and emotional state. Technique is essential, but empathy is what makes all the difference,” she points out.

This humanized approach has gained increasing space in contemporary dentistry and, according to Marcella, is a fundamental part of long-term success. After all, more than saving teeth, the goal is to care for people.

Prevention: The Best Treatment Is Still to Avoid It

Despite all the treatment options available today, nothing replaces prevention. Simple habits such as good oral hygiene, a balanced diet, and regular visits to the dentist remain the best strategies for avoiding problems that require endodontic intervention.

“Having regular check-ups, keeping restorations well-sealed, and scheduling routine cleanings is fundamental. A problem detected early is easier to treat and has a better prognosis,” advises Marcella Travitzki.

She also highlights the importance of oral health education, especially for children and adolescents. “Preventing tartar buildup, teaching correct brushing techniques, and encouraging the use of dental floss are practices that form the foundation for a lifetime of oral health,” she concludes.

Precision Measurement For Customized Advanced Endodontic Treatment Planning

A New Era for Endodontics

Advanced endodontics marks a milestone in modern dentistry. By combining technique, technology, and sensitivity, it expands treatment possibilities, offers more patient comfort, and improves clinical outcomes. Professionals like Dr. Marcella Falcão de Souza Bianchin Travitzki are examples of how qualified, integrated, and ethical practice can transform the patient experience and raise the standards of dental care.

More than just treating root canals, today’s endodontics treats people. And in this context, every detail matters — from the sharpest image to the warmest gesture. After all, a healthy smile begins with treatment performed with precision and empathy.
