Use, Muse & Amuse

muse

By Rory Winston

‘Temple of the muses’ – so sacred, so much grandeur, all that pressure attached to a single word: ‘museum.’ The fact that many are inspired to quote the etymology of the institution, and spend hours raptly invoking the atypical way in which they experience these renowned bastions of culture means there are way too few actually attending.

It is something one associates to foreign countries, something one sets aside a special time of the year to do. It is, for many, an intellectual obligation, a cultural necessity, a way in which to properly pay one’s respects to those who have contributed to our world; it is, in short, a visit to the cemetery.

Note: there is no such thing as a special ‘museum mood.’ There are as many different museums as there are emotional states. And, as sacrilegious as it may sound, museums are downright entertaining. They are there as much for our amusement as for our education.

While in town filming “Annie” with Jamie Foxx and Quvenzhane Wallis, actress Cameron Diaz went apartment hunting and purchased a $9 million condominium in the Walker Tower in Manhattan. The swanky new 3,022 square foot pad boasts three bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms. Her neighbors include Harrison Ford and Tom Cruise’s former wives Katie Holmes and Nicole Kidman. Who would have ever thought those two would end up in the same building?………..

Without a doubt, one of the highlights of the recent Art Basel Miami Beach 2013 fair was the simply marvelous presentation of outdoor and site-specific installations in Collins Park – the bit of acreage fronting GW’s long-time favorite museum in Miami Beach, the Bass Museum Of Art.

So I packed the Porsche Design Luggage one recent long weekend and took a “Staycation” to one of this city›s greatest neighborhoods – Battery Park City.  There GW took up a four day residence at the simply chic and exquisite Conrad Hotel all the way down at 102 North End. It was the very same weekend as I unpacked the designer luggage that early evening from the gorgeously chic executive Suite 1436 as GW uncorked the complimentary Veuve Clicquot; the boys a few blocks east on Wall Street had much to celebrate too, having pushed the boundaries of the Dow Jones Industrial to historic, record highs well beyond 16,000.

HOT 97: TALENT AT FEVER PITCH

By Rory Winston

A hotbed for talent, a hothouse for urban sounds, Hot 97 is the temperature and temperament of NY. There you have it: one last overcooked shout-out about just ‘how cool Hot can get’. But I’ve slung my last slogan and swung my last hyperbole.

Admittedly, it’s hard to avoid catchphrases while attempting to describe a contemporary rhythmic FM station – especially one that has retained integrity of vision without having sacrificed commercial viability.
